When I was a young girl, we had beautiful woods behind our home.  In one sunny clearing grew wild strawberries!  They were quite small…. maybe the size of a dime… but there was something ever so satisfying about lifting up the leaves and seeing them shining there like tiny rubies.   Fresa is Spanish for strawberries, and I think the name fits her to a tee.   Fresa is a wee bit wild, but ever so sweet!  Now complete and looking for a very special place to make her new home;  she was created from a piece of vintage Malden Mills long pile upholstery velvet in a beautiful neutral beige.   Malden Mills has that lovely density and sheen, there is really nothing quite like it.    Her paw pads and inner ears are made of vintage velvet in cream.

Fresa is about 4 and 3/4  inches tall when standing.  She has bent arms and straight legs with wire armature, so she can hold soft poses with her arms and legs.

She has hand painted pearlized emerald green eyes with an undereye white accent and a sewn in upper eyelid.  She has  shading near her mouth and eyes as well as above her cute little nose.  Her face has been deeply sculpted using invisible internal stitches.  Her nose is stitched in peach silk floss and has been sealed for durability and a soft shine.  I wanted Fresa to coordinate nicely with her cushion, so I’ve embroidered her with cotton floss.  She’s accented with lovely strawberry fruit, blossoms and foliage.  She also sports a sweet little silk bow above one ear in shades of scarlet, moss, and cream.

Her front and rear paws have pads made of ultra suede , and they have tiny little pulled and shaded toes.  She’s been stuffed with poly fil.

As always, I’ve paid very close attention to making sure that my miniatures have all the detail and intricacy of a much larger bear.  I am also a stickler for proportion.  I really like for them to pass for large bears until you see a  picture of one in my hand.

Fresa’s little tuffet is made from gorgeous silk dupioni in the most amazing turquoise color.  It reminds me of the color of the summer sky.  Upon it, I’ve stitched a garland of strawberries, blossoms and lovely leaves.  I think she looks quite fetching perched upon it, though she can certainly be displayed on her own.  The tuffet may be used as a traditional pincushion, or to display a special broach or pin if you like.  I made the tiny strawberry pins myself out of polymer clay.  I’ll be happy to include them.  It’s such great fun to challenge myself with the needle arts.  I must say it fills me with pride and warm feelings to know that I can help keep these lovely past times alive and well in this digital age! I never tire of learning!

The embroidery is done mostly in long and short satin stitch.  There are also French knots, stem stitch, herringbone stitch and fly stitches. This little tuffet has a hard base covered with white wool felt so it holds its shape perfectly and sits nicely upon a dresser top or shelf for display.
